How to Make a Full Fall Deco Mesh Wreath

How to Make a Full Fall Deco Mesh Wreath

Want a fall wreath with plenty of color and texture? Deco mesh makes it easy to build a full base, then you can add ribbon, leaves, pumpkins, and a sign to make it your own.

This project has several layers, so take your time and check how it looks from the front as you go. The wreath will fill out quickly!

Supplies

  • A wire wreath frame, approximately 14 inches

  • Fall-colored deco mesh in two or three coordinating colors

  • Wired ribbon in several fall patterns and widths

  • Chenille stems or wreath ties

  • Floral wire

  • Wire cutters and scissors

  • Faux fall leaves and pumpkin picks

  • A lightweight fall sign

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks, if needed

  • A wreath hanger

Step 1: Prepare the Frame

Attach chenille stems around the wire frame, spacing them evenly along the inner and outer rings. Twist each stem onto the frame, leaving its ends free so you can use them to secure the mesh and ribbon.

Don’t worry if the bare frame looks sparse. The layers will cover it.

Step 2: Add the Deco Mesh

Gather the end of your first mesh roll and fasten it to a tie. Pull out a loose loop of mesh, then secure the next gathered section to the following tie. Continue around the frame, making the loops similar in size.

Add another color of mesh in the open spaces. Alternate colors as you work so the wreath looks balanced. Fluff the loops toward the front to hide the frame.

Step 3: Cut and Add Ribbon Tails

Cut your ribbon into equal-length pieces. Fold each piece in half lengthwise and cut diagonally from the folded edge toward the open ends to make decorative V-shaped tails.

Layer two or three different ribbons together, pinch them at the center, and secure each bundle with a chenille stem. Place the bundles around the wreath, pointing some ribbon tails inward and others outward. Spread them apart so each pattern can be seen.

Step 4: Add Ribbon Loops

For extra fullness, make a few loose loops from your wired ribbon and secure each one at its center. Tuck them between the mesh and ribbon tails.

Gently shape the wired edges with your fingers. This is what gives the wreath its big, lively look.

Step 5: Position the Sign

Place your sign across the center and check its position before attaching it. Secure it to the wire frame with floral wire through the sign’s existing hanger or attachment points.

Make sure the sign is supported by the frame, rather than by the mesh or ribbon. Once it’s secure, pull a few loops and ribbon tails forward around its edges.

Step 6: Add Pumpkins and Leaves

Tuck pumpkin picks and faux leaves into the wreath, placing the larger accents on opposite sides of the sign for balance. Wire the picks to the frame where possible. Hot glue can help hold small leaves in place, but heavier pieces need a firm mechanical attachment.

Turn the wreath upright and adjust the accents until they’re easy to see without hiding the sign.

Step 7: Fluff and Finish

Fluff the mesh, separate the ribbon tails, and fill any visible gaps. Trim loose threads and tuck the ends of the chenille stems toward the back.

Hang your wreath and take one last look from a few feet away. A small adjustment to a ribbon loop or leaf can make the whole design feel balanced.

Your fall wreath is ready to welcome the season!
