How to Paint a Fall Mason Jar Door Hanger

A wooden blank is a great starting point for a fall project because you can make the finished piece entirely your own. You can follow the same color palette or choose colors that suit your home.

What You’ll Need

    • Fall mason jar wood cutout blank

    • Acrylic craft paint in cream, golden yellow, gray, white, orange, rust, and dark brown

    • Paintbrushes and a small detail brush

    • Makeup sponge or soft blending brush

    • Wood glue or craft adhesive for layered pieces

    • Burlap ribbon

    • Twine for hanging

    • Clear sealer suitable for painted wood, if desired

Step 1: Prepare the Pieces

Gently sand any rough spots on the wood and wipe away the dust. If your blank has separate lettering, leaves, or acorn pieces, lay everything out before painting so you can see how the layers fit together.

Step 2: Paint the Jar

Paint the upper part of the jar cream. Blend golden yellow into the lower half, keeping the transition soft rather than making a hard line. A lightly loaded sponge can help you blend the colors while the paint is still workable.

Paint the jar lid gray. Let the first coats dry, then add another coat wherever the wood shows through.

Step 3: Paint the Details

Paint the raised lettering white so it stands out against the jar. Give the acorns cream-colored bodies and dark brown caps. A few lines on the caps add texture.

For the leaves, try a golden orange on top of a deeper rust color. You can leave a little of the darker color visible around the edges to give them dimension.

Let every piece dry completely before assembly.

Step 4: Attach the Layers

Arrange the lettering, acorns, and leaves on the jar before applying glue. Once you like the placement, attach the wood pieces with an adhesive suitable for wood. Follow the adhesive’s directions and allow it to set before hanging the piece.

Step 5: Add the Bow and Hanger

Make a full bow from burlap ribbon and attach it near the jar lid. Thread twine through the hanger holes and knot it securely on the back.

If your door hanger will be displayed on a covered porch, consider sealing the painted wood and keep it protected from direct rain.

And there you have it: a fall door hanger that starts with a simple wood blank and ends with a piece that feels completely personal.
