This Frankenstein’s monster mason jar starts as an unfinished wood blank with the face details already cut. Paint each section, attach the layered pieces, and add a ribbon hanger to give your Halloween decoration its own personality.
The bright green, black, and silver version shown here is one way to finish it. You can follow these colors or invent your own monster.
Supplies
- Frankenstein’s monster mason jar wood blank
- Acrylic paint in bright green, black, white, and metallic silver or gray
- Small and medium paintbrushes
- Fine-grit sandpaper
- Wood glue or craft adhesive
- Black ribbon for hanging
- Clear sealer suitable for painted wood, if desired
Step 1: Prepare the Blank
Lay out all the wooden pieces so you know where each one belongs. Lightly sand any rough edges and wipe away the dust. Take a photo of the unpainted layout before separating the pieces.
Step 2: Paint the Base Colors
Paint the monster’s face bright green and the hair black. Paint the mason jar lid and the bolts on each side metallic silver or gray. Let the paint dry and add another coat where needed.
Step 3: Paint the Face Pieces
Paint the eyes white with black pupils. Paint the eyebrows, smile, and mouth details black. Give the teeth a coat of white, then paint the forehead stitches silver or gray so they stand out against the green face.
A small detail brush helps with narrow pieces. Let each color dry before handling the pieces again.
Step 4: Assemble the Face
Place all the painted pieces on the base without glue first. Check that the eyes, stitches, bolts, and smile line up the way you want. Then glue the pieces in place and allow the adhesive to set.
Step 5: Add the Hanger
Thread black ribbon through the holes in the jar lid and secure it on the back. Make sure the ribbon is firmly attached before hanging your monster.
For a little extra protection, apply a clear sealer according to its directions. Display the finished hanger indoors or somewhere protected from rain.
